Ms. Murphy's English Class

It's All About ME!

I'm crazy. At least, that's the general consensus I get when I tell people that I'm going to teach high school English. Sometimes I think they are right! When I was in high school I had no desire to become a teacher. I hated school, and I couldn't imagine why anybody would ever choose to come back everyday until they retire. My opinion about teaching as a career did not change until I entered college. I realized that the things that made me hate school - boring teachers, boring lessons, pointless work, lack of intellectual stimulation - did not HAVE to be a part of every student's education. School can be enjoyable and learning can be meaningful, if the teacher makes it that way. I chose to become a teacher because I feel like I can accomplish that, and I learned that I love to work with students. I do everything I know how to make my classroom a place where students feel comfortable and know that they have the opportunity to succeed. I employ a variety of activities and teaching methods to meet the needs of all types of learners. Most importantly, the things I teach in my classroom are always, in some way, applicable and meaningful to students' lives outside of school.

Outside of school I like to think that I am a fairly "normal" person. I am 22 years old and am finishing my last year at Western Michigan University. I will graduate with a B.A. in English Education with a minor in Spanish. I grew up in Grandville, MI, a suburb outside of Grand Rapids. I hate the cold and snow but will occasionally venture out of my heated apartment to go snowboarding. In the summer I spend as much time as possible at the beach and boating with my family. I have a fiance, Sean, who is in the Air Force and currently stationed in Georgia, and one baby who is a Chihuahua/Jack Russell Terrier mix named Paco!
